What Should You Pack In Your Carry On

When traveling, you should always remember to bring a carry on bag. But what should be in your carry on bag?

1. Passport or Photo ID

This may seem obvious, but many people forget this. Even if you don’t have a passport, it’s a good idea to keep a photo ID in your bag in case your flight gets delayed. You may not be able to check into a hotel, get a rental car, etc. without proper identification. You’ll also want to pack any documents that you will need for your trip such as printed tickets, directions and itineraries.

2. Valuables

Make sure you pack all your prized possessions in your carry on like jewelry, laptops, watches or anything that would be hard to replace. If you pack your valuables in a checked bag and that bag is lost or stolen, those items can be gone forever.

3. Phone & Device Chargers

Pack your chargers for phones, tablets, laptops, etc. in your carry on bag. Many flights now have outlets where you can charge your device during the flight. Also, if you have a long layover between flights, you don’t want to run out of battery when you need it.

4. Headphones

When traveling, you don’t want to annoy fellow passengers by watching videos or listening to music with your volume turned up. It’s a good idea to have your earbuds or AirPods in your pocket as you board. This way you can easily access them when you board the plane.

5. Toiletries

Pack toiletries such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, body wash, shampoo & conditioner, hand sanitizer and deodorant. Keeping a small selection of toiletries in your carry on prevents you from having to rummage through your suitcase when you want to freshen up. These can include items to include in your covid safety kit. Remember to abide by the 3-1-1 rule when traveling by plane.

6. Skincare

Keep your skin hydrated by bringing carry on sized chapstick, hand lotion and sunscreen. For women, you will want to pack a makeup bag. This bag should include makeup remover, touchup make up (mascara, lipstick, etc.) and any other beauty products so you can stay looking your best. Note, they must comply with the 3-1-1 rule.

7. A Change Of Clothes

If you are traveling on a long flight or if you have layovers, you’ll probably want to change clothes before you begin your vacation. Showering and changing your clothes can help boost your mood after a long flight. Plus, if your luggage is delayed, you’ll want to have at least something to change into.

Also, by packing a change of clothes, you can travel comfortably regardless of the weather and change when you arrive.

8. Daily Medications

If you take medication daily, you’ll want to pack a few days worth in your carry on, especially if your medication is critical to your health. If you checked bag is delayed or lost, you’ll want to have some medication on hand.

Also, if you wear contact lenses, you’ll want to take a few extra disposable pairs. If you have permanent lenses, remember to pack the case you store them in. This way you can store them if you’re planning on sleeping on the flight.

9. A Light Blanket

Airplanes are notoriously chilly. So be sure to bring a light blanket to keep you warm. You may not want to use the airline’s blanket since most airlines do not wash their blankets. A small blanket that can clip to backpack or fit in your purse can save space in your carry on.

10. Filtered Refillable Water Bottle

Flying can really dehydrate you. And it can be a good 20-30 minutes before the cabin crew gets to you during beverage service. Some airlines may not have beverage service at all. Now, you can’t bring any water bottles through security. But you are allowed to bring an empty water bottle through security and fill it up on the other side. You’ll want a water bottle with a filter that can be filled with tap water after going through security. If your carry on is stuffed, you can get a collapsible water bottle to save space.

11. Snacks

Airports are notoriously known to have very expensive food so make sure to pack some snacks to keep the hunger away. And a small bag of pretzels from the cabin crew may not always cut it. As long as it’s wrapped and non-liquid, it can go through security. It’s certainly cheaper and more satisfying than buying a pre-made sandwich at the airport.

12. Entertainment

To keep you occupied throughout your flight, you’ll need to bring some source of amusement. Bring a book, magazine or game. Bring paperbacks so you’re not weighed down while traveling. Even though laptops have to be stowed under the seat during take off and landing, you can download movies and tv shows on your phone or tablet. Many services such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime allow you to download content to watch without needing internet or data service.

These are just a few key items to make your trip easier. The most important thing is not to wait until the last minute to start packing.
